The school year is already well underway, and it is hard to believe we already have a whole week under our belts! My favorite part so far has been seeing the fruits of our labor from last year. Our Junior Academy team and the support staff worked very, very hard last year. Most of our 7th graders have returned as 8th graders and how they have grown since last August! Looking back at their poor academics, bad behavior, disrespect, and selfishness, sometimes I cannot believe they are the same students. There were some days last year when I thought we would never make it through! Now they are kind, respectful, mild-mannered, so far their grades are good, and they are working hard. I am so proud of the way they are going up. I know we at school cannot take all the credit. Some changes come from being one year older, and others come from home. But, I know that we are offering them something that not many other schools offer.
Over 80% of our students eat free or reduced breakfast and lunch at school each day, most do not have both parents, some don’t even have one. About 1/4 of our students do not have English-speaking parents, some live in homes where alcohol and drugs are abused, others have parents who work really hard but cannot afford to keep the phone connected. There is a fairly large portion of our student body who do not have access to a computer at home. Several students are involved in gangs or have parents involved in gangs. When I hear their stories and think about all they are up against it inspires me to work harder for them and give them more opportunities.
Last year we established a new discipline policy and positive behavior plan, both made a huge impact in student behavior. We gave them opportunities to do special art projects and have individual counseling, learn to play instruments and sports, help others through community service, and gain social and technological skills. More than all the opportunities and projects, we have a staff that puts students first and works hard to help them succeed. I am proud of what we have accomplished, and I look forward to the possibilities ahead.
Too bad I had to pass on all those polished 7th graders to the 8th grade teachers…I now have a whole new bunch of 7th graders, and they are a piece of work! ![]()
